Many people living with lung cancer report feeling a stigma associated with their condition, and experience judgment from others. Survey respondents living with lung cancer said:
“I can see people physically shrink away when I say lung cancer. They just do not know what to say where when I had colon cancer, they were more than sympathetic. It does bother me. I have told only my partner about the lung cancer. I just do not tell friends and even family much of anything because of the stigma.” – Survey respondent living with lung cancer
“I had Stage I breast cancer two years before the lung cancer. With the former, there’s so much support, research is intense and well-funded, and there is definitely no stigma. With lung cancer, it’s the exact opposite. I was extremely resentful the first year … So many unknowns, and I cannot count the number of times I was asked if I smoked.” – Survey respondent living with lung cancer
