PHILADELPHIA — March 5, 2020 — Health Union will share research findings based on data and experience from the company’s oncology-specific online health communities in a poster presentation at the American Psychosocial Oncology Society (APOS) 17th Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon. The poster will be presented on Thursday, March 12.

Information on the accepted abstract is as follows:

Hello, my name is “Cancer;” Assessing patient perceptions of cancer survivorship language
This poster presentation will take place at 1:45 p.m. Language around survival, battles, and bravery has long characterized cancer survivorship messaging. For some, this is appropriate; however, many people may internalize dominant cancer terminology and thus have a diminished sense of personalized control. Common words and phrases were identified and coded across preferred and undesired cancer terminology categories and themes were identified through qualitative analysis. The abstract was authored by Health Union’s Shayna Yeates; Nina Winterbottom; Sara Hayes, MPH; Brian Green, MS; Leslie Beth Herbert, PhD; and Kaitlyn McNamara.

The APOS 17th Annual Conference will take place March 11-13 at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront in Portland, OR. According to the APOS website, the APOS was formed in 1986 to bring together professionals working in the psychological, behavioral and social aspects of cancer. Its mission broadened in the early 2000s to network professionals from all disciplines working in psychosocial oncology.
